Traveling (Episode 1)
Matt and I (Marilyn) met and started dating in 2013. We have been inseparable ever since. Throughout our final semester of college, I was applying for jobs on a weekly basis. He'd always watch me apply for jobs, knowing full well that working in America was not what he wanted to do with his life. One night after graduation, I told him about a dream I had had about traveling the world. At that moment, he knew this was the perfect opportunity to fully explain to me about how much he wanted to travel.
After convincing me to travel, we began researching a long backpacking trip around Europe. We quickly realized we didn't have the funds for this and this wasn't exactly the way we wanted to travel anyway. We wanted to travel long-term and make it apart of our entire lives. We didn't want to only travel for a few months and then return back home. We knew about teaching English abroad and thought this could be the perfect way for us to travel long-term. We found a program online called Island TEFL. According to their website, this program would give us a TEFL certification to teach English, a place to live, and a guaranteed job when we arrived in Thailand. We spent thousands of dollars on the program to later find out we were "scammed" and would not receive anything we thought we would.
Telling our friends and family we were leaving wasn't easy. Matt was in the car with his family when they asked him when he was going to start looking for a job. They kept asking about it incessantly. Eventually, he snapped and told them he was moving to Thailand. They were shocked for a few minutes, but quickly began to understand. He'd mentioned to them before that he would be traveling after he graduated and they sort of shook it off back then. When he finally told them, though, they were a little shocked that he was actually going through with it. His friends were more shocked than his family, however. They thought he was flat out crazy and didn't understand why he was doing something like this. I waited a little longer to tell my parents that I was leaving. I was more nervous to tell my parents than Matt was. My parents are a little older than Matt's and naturally more old-fashioned, so they thought that I should have a traditional life. I eventually told them over dinner one night and they were incredibly shocked. They tried to convince me numerous times not to go, but this didn't stop me from leaving.
On October 12, 2014, we left for Thailand. It was our first excruciatingly long international flight and, although we didn't know it then, it wouldn't be our last. This began our travels throughout the world. It has been over two years now and we have visited and lived in numerous countries and cities throughout the world and we have no intent on stopping.
